about

The is work that I had originally done for Nuit Blanche North 2020 (in Huntsville Muskoka during the summer) which was cancelled due to the global pandemic. I went on to complete the work anyways. This is a continuation of the software that I have been working on and have presented in its various stages of development since 2016 (robgillthings.net/nb/). I had originally planned to present the same set-up: table with sensors, projections on a nearby wall, and audio speakers. Participants would be invited to use the sensors to construct a fake menu consisting of ridiculous items for sale. During the process, audio would be triggered and an automated voice would read out the utterly inane menu selections. Key to this activity is the fact that there would be no way for the participants to know what action creates what result.

At any rate, I kept working with the audio and software for the show and these are the results. What you hear is a re-mix of the composition I developed to use as raw material for this piece - material that can be found on the release, 'things music1' (robgillthings.bandcamp.com/album/things-music1). Other material that was going to be used in this show can be heard in 'things music 2' (*https://robgillthings.bandcamp.com/album/things-music2) - the text to speech pieces in particular. I used the software that I have written, the NB (NETTT Blaster), to perform this re-mix. Here is a video of the results: vimeo.com/manage/videos/518409319. It is a rudimentary form of 'sound painting': the triangles, used to trigger samples, change colour in a unpredictable way when selected so I kept playing the triangles until I was happy with the overall visual composition. The resulting audio produced by this action of painting is what you hear in the first track - recorded on Jan. 10, 2021. Website project page: robgillthings.net/2020-2/.

The second piece is some other thing I did.
