about

An audio/visual project developed using C++ in OpenFrameworks and Supercollider, during September and October of 2023.
The first track is the sketch drawn in Ableton Live. It consists of thousands of very short notes drawn in the piano roll view. The second track is a short, real-time recording of what it sounds like when drawing the notes and this is the inspiration for this project. I wanted to be able to play back the *drawing* of the notes in addition to the standard linear left to right playback.
The cover of this album is a screenshot from the software. The small blue squares are the notes and they are contained inside what is meant to be a simplified rendition of the piano roll with note pitch represented vertically from high at the top to low at the bottom and time represented horizontally moving right. I call each 81 x 81 image a 'frame'. The recording that you hear in track three is a playback of the frames that make up a recording I made earlier. There are 100 frames, each drawn by hand in a similar way to what you see in the album cover (a 'roughly even scattering'). In the third track, you hear the notes being played back as they would be in a multi-track (much like what you hear in track 1). The fourth track represents why I went to the trouble of writing this software in the first place. What you hear is the playback of the notes in the order that they were drawn, essentially duplicating what you hear in track two, except many more notes and played much faster - like a time lapse recording of the creative process.
